A Spartan soldier was a fighting machine and the most feared warriors of their time and that is exactly what the actors looked like. So how did they achieve this look? The trainers of the 300 workout spilled the beans on the magic ingredient..hard work! Basically the actors sweated blood for five days a week for 4 months. With a backbone of hard work, what were some of the other components of the 300 workout approach that made it so successful?
The motto adopted was appearance is a consequence of fitness. The 300 workout that was followed had a goal in mind. It had to make the actors look like shredded warriors who were athletic and lived off the land. Not like buffed bodybuilders. So a bulking up diet was not appropriate and was substituted for a calorie reduced diet that provided just enough energy for working out and recovering. The other crucial aspect of the 300 workout was recovery. Working out combined with rehearsal of fight scenes and training led to 10-12 hour work days. A key part of recovery was having a massage therapist on set everyday and a twice weekly visit from a kinesiologist.
Another important aspect of the 300 workout was that it was also used as a sort of bonding experience for the cast. Workouts were constantly changed and challenges were common. The trainers wanted everyone working out together and for the cast to see one another trying their hardest in these challenges and at times failing challenges. But this was all part of the plan, for when you fail in front of your comrades and you have been honest with yourself in your effort, it builds trust and that is exactly what the Spartan army was all about. And that is what was needed for the actors to play a unit in the movie.
Honesty appears to be another foundation of the 300 workout. Workout logs were visible on a chalkboard for everyone else to see. This build more camaraderie and a sort of ‘we are all going through this’ mindset. Plus it made things accountable and this was applied to the diet also. Working out, fight rehearsal and eating all took place in the same big room it was all done under the scrutiny of everyone else. So there was no cheating. The 300 workout experience sounds like it would have been a tough 4 months but one I am sure those who participated in it look back on as a unique memory.
Incorrectly it has been said on the internet that the 300 workout challenge is the actual workout used to prepare the actors for the movie. It is not. It was simply a one off challenge set by the trainers Jon Gabriel and done by invitation only. It was repeated frequently or used often, just as a once off test or challenge.
